What do we do when we no longer trust each others writing as being authentic.

Since its invention, writing has been a primary communication medium by which we humans could convert our thoughts and intelligence that exist in the vast neural connections within our brain into the physical world.

Our writing was the means by which professors could get a glimpse of our understanding, hiring managers could learn more about our career aspirations, and we could convert our expertise into tangible work product.

Technology is rapidly upending this.

The gradual commoditization of writing - the traditional medium of self-expression - due to Generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude, is making writing easy, quick, and is elevating everyone’s ability… and perceived competence.

The consequence however has been the erosion of trust in truly self-authored written material - a key differentiator between professionals. The question that now has a permanent place at our discernment table when we come across written material is - “did you really write this - or did AI?”.

If people can no longer trust what they read as being something that is truly yours, always being slightly suspect that it was created artificially - casting a shadow on your competence - it loses its effectiveness and impact.

Therefore, I believe what professionals must do to stand out and thrive is to develop a new competitive advantage that will be harder for AI to replace for the foreseeable future - the ability to effectively communicate and express your ideas live and in-person through your speech, presence, and non-verbal communication.

In fact - this has always been the true differentiator - AI has just sped up our need to get back to it
