Everything your audience says is data - listen hard and always
One of the most transforming realizations that I came to as a trainer is the idea that everything your audience is saying is data. Data that helps shape the direction of your session, in real time.
This includes:
Direct answers to your questions
Insights shared back from small-group activities
Even a quiet side comment whispered between two learners
All this data then becomes the basis of real-time conversation, discussion, and exploration.
And the more you train yourself to listen, capture, and respond to that data, the more alive, relevant, and useful your session becomes to your learners.
Use what you hear to guide real-time discussion, ask sharper follow-up questions, or pivot where needed.
When you do, participants stay engaged—because the session feels like it’s being built with them, not just delivered at them.
So come up with great questions, break the learners into groups to speak amongst themselves, listen intentionally, collect the data, and ultimately shape the data into the course in real-time. This will force you to become comfortable with going off script and thinking on your feet.
