Every Room Matters

I remember a story I once heard about how the comedian Chris Rock would prepare for his big comedy shows in front of thousands of people in sold-out arenas.
He would go and practice his material in off-the-beaten-path smaller venues.
This served two functions - it gave the audiences who may not always have access to him a chance to see him, and second, it gave him yet another chance in front of a live audience to hone his skills.
Throughout my career, I have had large audiences of a couple hundred to intimate gatherings of fewer than 10. In either case, it is both a privilege and an opportunity for growth.
In this picture, I just finished giving a presentation on professional communication skills for a group at the Northern Illinois School of Business.
If you aspire to develop your room-leading skills, a great way to do so while also helping others, like the next generation, is to both network and directly contact universities and colleges and look for speaking opportunities.
