Leadership Starts with Being Visible

What is one of the simplest—and most powerful—ways to build trust and culture as a leader? Be consistently visible.

Recently, I was leading a training session on building collaborative workplaces for a group of leaders.

During the session, our attention turned to figuring out how to rebuild trust and communication across teams when both had eroded over time.

The leaders had received feedback from staff that they wanted more connected leadership with less of a disconnect between leaders and staff. Comments like "the only time I see my leader is when I do something wrong" haunted many of them.

All the leaders in the room wanted to improve things - they cared. But, the challenge for them was the reality of their work:

- Everyone was swimming in work, and time was a premium

- Staff and leaders were hybrid and spread out

- New, younger employees were onboarding fast

- Face-to-face time was becoming rare

After a series of small group and whole group discussions, a central high-leverage leadership idea kept coming up. Simply be more visible

If you're a leader trying to build or rebuild trust and communication, especially in a dispersed or hybrid workplace, start by:

- Getting out of the office and walking the floor

- Go offsite to your staff, just to offer support
